Valery Afanassiev

Valery Afanassiev was born in Moscow in 1947 and studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Jacob Zak and subsequently Emil Gilels. He has won two international competitions: the Bach Competition in Leipzig (1968) and the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels (1972). In 1974, he requested political asylum in Belgium and currently lives in Versailles. Since his defection, he has given concerts throughout Europe, Japan and the United States.
Valery Afanassiev has recorded around twenty CDs for Denon, the booklets for which he writes himself. The aim is to give the listener a total picture of his insight into the composer's mind. His most recent recordings are the Well-Tempered Clavier, Schubert's three last sonatas, and Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, three last sonatas and the five piano concertos, live recorded with the Mozarteum of Salzburg.
Valery Afanassiev has written ten novels, eight in English and two in French. Four novels have been published in France; one in Germany; two in Russia. He has also written fourteen cycles of poems, a book of long stories, a book of short stories and two theatrical pieces inspired by The Pictures from an Exhibition and Kreisleriana, in both of which he performs as pianist and actor.
For several years, Valery Afanassiev has also conducted a variety of international orchestras. He endeavours to approach something of the sound quality and polyphony of his favourite conductors: Furtwangler, Toscanini, Mengelberg, Knappertsbusch, Bruno Walter and Klemperer.
