Richter and Painting
A special place in the Richter collection belongs to paintings and draw.
ings by two very close friends of his, Anna Troyanovskaya and Ketevana
Magalashvili.
«Anna Ivanovna Troyanovskaya is a great friend of mine. I have spent very many hours of my life at her place.. I learnt from her and tried my hand at pastel drawing under her guidance.»
Richter’s collection contains many works by Vasily Shukhayev.
«...Shukhayev is a special person, one of the easiest people I have ever met. A man with a strong, sunny temperament.»
The superb, little known dual portrait of the Verigins by Pyotr Konchalovsky, which Richter inherited from Verigina, strikes a major chord in the music room.
«I think I first met P.P.Konchalovsky when I was living at Anna Troyanovskaya’s in Bugry, Konchalovsky’s ‘estate’... I also remember him sitting in a box at my concerts (incidentally he was very fond of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations). His was a strong, rich, generous, easy and artistic talent.»
«When I first went to the Arbat, to the home of the fine chamber singer Nina Dorliak, I noticed this portrait straightaway over the piano, next to the original, and the likeness was most striking, but on closer inspection I saw in the eyes and expression something southern and passive found in Caucasian women, but certainly not in the original.»
Western painters from the Richter collection are represented here by
Hans Hartung, Alexander Calder, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso’s Dove
with a donatory inscription. Sviatoslav Teofilovich left a large part of his collection of paintings to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. These pictures are now in the Museum of Private Collections, and the display at the Memorial Apartment changes frequently.
The Richter collection contains many paintings and drawings by Dmitri
Krasnopevtsev.
«… To my mind, Dmitri Krasnopevtsev is one of Moscow’s most talented artists. His world, the still life, is expressed canonically, yet is also strikingly individual. I have been an admirer of his for a long time and organised two large exhibitions of his work at my place, in 1962 and 1975. I value his friendship.»
Natalia Goncharova’s Polotnyany Zavod is interesting, and the two portraits of Imast by Artur Fonvizin.
«I received letters from an unknown correspondent who signed herself ‘Imast’. She announced that she was a witch who could tell my fortune and said that I would get many awards and surprises. The letters were very entertaining and eccentric. I never actually met her, but she sent me this portrait via someone else as a present (Fonvizin!!!)…»
